The Chicken or the Egg? Understanding Chronic Pain and Mood Disorders. Presented by Dr. Lawrence Robbins, M.D. Migraine and chronic daily headaches are very common and cause a great decrease in quality of life. Some 27 million Americans suffer from migraine and many more from chronic daily headaches. People living with bipolar disorder see an increased rate of migraine: about 32% of those who fit on the bipolar spectrum report a history of migraines. One recent study of headache clinic patients found that 8.6% of those with migraine fit the bipolar spectrum. For headache sufferers, there are a number of new treatments available, both in medications and non-medicine areas.
Another frequent concurrence is depression with pain. When treating individuals with headaches, treating the accompanying depression and anxiety is crucial. Depression cannot be treated effectively without treating pain, and pain cannot be effectively treated without treating the depression.
